DR Who fans were delighted by the announcement of Christopher Eccleston returning as Doctor Who for an upcoming spin-off adventure.

However, many are now calling out for the actor, 56, to return to the main series, currently being fronted by Jodie Whittaker.

Christopher Eccleston will reprise his Doctor Who role after swearing he wouldn’t go back.

On returning to the famous role, Christopher said: “After 15 years it will be exciting to revisit the Ninth Doctor’s world, bringing back to life a character I love playing.”

Taking to Twitter, fans pleaded for the Ninth Doctor to make a return to the main series in the future.

One fan commented: “With the News that Christopher Eccleston doing Big Finish, coming out today… And the 60th Anniversary coming up in a couple of years… Is it too much to ask for him to be a part of it? #DoctorWho.”

Another shared: “I imagine Chris Eccleston could well be involved in this [a reunion of all the former doctors] at some point to now! #doctorwho.”

The actor expressed his delight to be reprising the role of Dr Who.

Scottish actor John Barrowman has already made a surprise comeback as Captain Jack Harkness, so it’s possible that the Ninth Doctor could end up making a cameo in the future alongside his friend.

Jack made a guest appearance in the latest series in the episode that introduced Jo Martin as a new iteration of The Doctor.

Speaking about Chris reprising his role, Big Finish chairman Jason Haigh-Ellery said: “I first talked to Christopher about returning to the role of the Doctor at a fan convention in February this year.

“Christopher said he was enjoying meeting the fans and was pleased that his Doctor was remembered so fondly.
