DOOM: The Dark Ages - I Forgot to Breathe While Slaughtering Hell's Finest

Holy crap. I just spent 26 straight hours with DOOM: The Dark Ages, and my thumbs are literally numb. Not figuratively—LITERALLY numb. My girlfriend walked in around hour 18 and just silently left a sandwich next to me before backing away slowly. Smart woman.

Listen to the Summary

When Hell Feels Like Home

Let's be honest. Messing with a classic like DOOM is basically asking for death threats from gaming purists. I was terrified idSoftware would screw this up. They didn't.

Instead, they've created something that feels like teh original DOOM got possessed by a demon, hit the gym for 5 years, and came back with a vengeance. It's familiar but so much more.

I literally found myself standing up during intense battles. Like, completely unaware I'd left my chair. Just standing there, sweating, controller in a death grip, not breathing. My roommate walked by during one particularly brutal fight and said "Dude, you look like you're having a stroke." Thanks, Carl.

Weapons That Make You Giggle Like a Psychopath

Remember when you got your first BFG in the original DOOM? That childlike glee? The Dark Ages delivers that feeling about 12 different times.

The Impaler might be my new favorite digital murder tool. Once upgraded, it slows down time for perfect headshots. I spent $60 on this game just to watch demon heads pop in slow motion. Worth. Every. Penny.

And then there's the shield. A SHIELD. In DOOM! I thought it would feel out of place, but it's brilliant. You can upgrade it to slice through enemies or deflect attacks back at them. During one fight, I deflected a fireball back at a Hell Knight and he exploded into what I can only describe as demonic confetti. I may have squealed.

But nothing—NOTHING—compares to the flail. A ball and chain that turns you into a medieval demon blender. I've never felt so powerful in a game.

Wait... Is That... Plot?

Previous DOOM games basically said "here's a gun, demons bad, go shoot." The Dark Ages actually gives you... story? And it's good?

You're the Doom Slayer (duh), but now you're caught between the Night Sentinels of Argent D'Nur and these weird angel-like beings called Maykrs. They both want you to kill demons, but something feels off about the whole arrangement.

I won't spoil anything, but around Chapter 8, there's a twist that made me put down my controller and just stare at the screen for a solid minute. Didn't see it coming AT ALL.

Sometimes You Just Need to Ride a Dragon

Back in 2016 when DOOM rebooted, I remember thinking "this is great, but where's my dragon?" Finally, someone at idSoftware heard my drunken prayers.

Yes, you can ride a dragon. A DRAGON. In DOOM.

It happens during Chapter 14, and I swear I took about 50 screenshots. My PlayStation storage is now 40% DOOM dragon pics. No regrets.

The Soundtrack Will Melt Your Face (In a Good Way)

I dropped $220 on Turtle Beach headphones last year, adn I finally feel justified. The soundtrack is brutal, beautiful chaos that perfectly complements the on-screen carnage.

I found myself headbanging so hard during one battle that I knocked over my coffee. Didn't even stop to clean it up. Sorry, carpet.

Those Moments When You Just... Can't

The intensity of The Dark Ages is no joke. There were times when I had to pause the game just to let my heart rate return to something resembling normal human levels.

Chapter 17 nearly broke me. I died 23 times (yes, I counted) trying to take down this one particular boss. When I finally beat him, I screamed so loud my neighbor texted me: "everything ok over there?" No, Kevin, everything is not ok. I just spent 40 minutes being humiliated by a digital demon.

But that victory? Pure dopamine.

The Ugly Truth

Listen. I've reviewed 16 games this year already. Most were fine. Some were good. A couple were great.

DOOM: The Dark Ages isn't just great. It's the kind of game that makes me question why I waste time doing anything else besides playing it.

Is it perfect? No. The platforming sections occasionally feel a bit clunky, and there's one particular enemy type (those damn Pinky Riders) that feels slightly overpowered.

But these are tiny complaints in what is otherwise a masterpiece of controlled chaos.

I haven't felt this way about a game since... God, maybe since the original DOOM? When I was 12, eating Cheetos in my parents' basement, telling my mom "just five more minutes" for about six hours straight.

The Dark Ages brought that feeling back. Pure, unfiltered gaming joy.

Game of the Year? Yeah, probably.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go start my second playthrough. Those demons aren't going to impale themselves.
