Dusty PlayStation Treasures: Your Old Games Could Be Worth a Small Fortune

Holy crap. I just spent three hours digging through my parents' attic looking for my old PlayStation games after reading this news. Spoiler alert: Mom threw them out in 2011 during "the great basement purge" (still haven't forgiven her for that one).

Turns out those plastic discs we carelessly tossed around as kids might be worth serious cash now. Like, pay-your-electric-bill-for-several-months kind of money. Three PlayStation classics in particular have skyrocketed in value, with some fetching over £400 EACH.

Time to call your siblings and ask if they "borrowed" any of your games in 1998 and never returned them.

Remember When PlayStation Was Everything?

The original PlayStation wasn't just popular in the 90s—it was THE status symbol. I still remember begging my parents for one for Christmas 1996, only to unwrap socks and a dictionary. (Got it for my birthday six months later though!)

Now collectors are willing to pay absurd amounts for certain titles from that era. Which might actually help if you're trying to afford a PS5 after Sony's recent price hike that made British gamers collectively groan.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: The Game Nobody Liked That's Now Worth £404

According to PriceCharting (teh website that tracks video game collectibles), a sealed copy of Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero could net you a cool £404.

Even opened copies are worth something. Complete with box? About £112. Just the disc? £50.

But here's the really wild part—even the MANUAL alone is valued at £54! The empty box? £44!

If you've somehow kept a sealed copy that's been professionally graded, you're looking at approximately £445. Though obviously these prices fluctuate based on who's buying, what condition your copy is in, and whether other sellers are flooding the market.

I actually owned this game. Traded it for a copy of Crash Bandicoot and £5 back in 1998. Worst. Deal. Ever.

The Spin-Off Nobody Asked For

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero landed in Europe in December 1997, a couple months before the N64 version. It was the franchise's first attempt at an action-adventure format instead of the traditional fighting game.

Critics hated it. Gamers mostly hated it. But apparently time (and scarcity) heals all wounds, because now it's worth a small fortune.

Got Resident Evil? You Might Be Sitting on £581

While a loose Resident Evil disc is barely worth the plastic it's printed on (£11), a sealed copy could fetch up to £581. The professionally graded sealed versions? Potentially £639.

The original 1996 Resident Evil doesn't need much introduction. It basically invented survival horror as we know it, sold millions, and spawned an empire of games, movies, books, and that awful Netflix series nobody talks about anymore.

Listen. I still have nightmares about those dogs jumping through the windows. Twenty-seven years later and I still flinch when I hear breaking glass.

The Racing Game That Couldn't Beat Mario Kart

Rounding out the valuable trio is Mega Man: Battle & Chase—a racing game that released in Europe on April 3, 1998.

Even a loose disc is worth £56. Complete with box? £156. Sealed? £405. And if you've had it professionally graded and sealed? An eye-watering £718.

The box alone is valued at £62, with the manual coming in at £34.

This game never even made it to the US as a standalone release (it was later included in a 2006 collection). Critics gave it mixed reviews, mainly because it couldn't hold a candle to Mario Kart.

But now it's worth more than my first car. Go figure.

Should You Sell Your Treasures?

Before you rush to eBay, remember that values fluctuate. Your games could become MORE valuable over time... or completely worthless if PlayStation decides to re-release everything digitally for £3.99 each.

My advice? Check your parents' attic. Call that cousin who "borrowed" your games. Look under your bed. You might be sitting on enough cash to make that PS5 price hike a little less painful.

And if you find a sealed copy of any of these games? Maybe don't open it. Unlike my neighbor who opened his mint condition Pokémon cards to "see if they were still fun." Poor Mark.
