Holy Crap, Cookie Cutter on Switch Made Me Break My Controller (In a Good Way)

Let me start with this: I've played a lot of Metroidvanias. Like, an embarrassing amount. My partner literally staged an intervention in 2021 when I disappeared for a week playing Hollow Knight. But Cookie Cutter: Overkill Edition just landed on Switch, and sweet mother of mercy, I haven't been this obsessed since I found that secret area in Ori that took me 6 hours to reach.

Blood. Everywhere.

Wait, What Even IS This Beautiful Nightmare?

Imagine if Quentin Tarantino and the Earthworm Jim designers got absolutely hammered together and decided to make a game. That's Cookie Cutter. You play as Cherry, this completely unhinged android waitress who's basically on a revenge tour that would make Uma Thurman's Bride character say "whoa, maybe dial it back a notch."

The game throws you into this place called Megastructure, which is this gorgeous hand-drawn hellscape where Cherry is hunting down the evil Infonet who took her love. And lemme tell ya - the Switch version looks CRISP. I was playing handheld mode on teh train yesterday and some guy literally leaned over and went "what the hell is THAT?" before asking for the title. Convert number one.

Those Boss Fights Though...

I'm not ashamed to admit I died 14 times on the third boss. FOURTEEN. My roommate started a death counter on our kitchen whiteboard and was adding tally marks every time I screamed. The Overkill Edition adds these new cut-scenes before boss battles that are *chef's kiss* perfect for building up the dread of knowing you're about to get absolutely wrecked.

The voice acting is new too. And thank god they didn't cheap out on this - the performances actually add so much to these deranged characters. Cherry sounds exactly like I imagined - part psycho, part heartbroken, all badass.

$60 for THIS? Take My Money

Look, I spent $4K building a gaming PC last year, and I'm playing this mostly on my Switch. That should tell you something. The 60FPS makes a huge difference - everything feels so smooth when you're chainsawing through enemies or (my personal favorite) using an electric guitar to rain down musical destruction.

I keep finding these little Easter eggs too. Yesterday I found this hidden room with what I'm 99% sure is a reference to Hollow Knight, and I nearly fell off my couch. The developers clearly love the games that inspired them.

Confession: I Almost Rage Quit

Those lock rooms. God. Those freaking lock rooms where waves of enemies just keep coming and the doors won't open until you've murdered literally everything? I almost threw my Switch across the room during one particularly brutal sequence in the second area.

But then something clicked. I finally got the timing down for building up the VOID meter (which lets you either heal or unleash these devastating attacks), and suddenly I was dancing through enemies like some kind of blood-soaked ballerina.

The healing is painfully slow though. Like, "maybe I should go make a sandwich while I wait" slow.

Is It Worth The Frustration?

Yes. A thousand times yes.

Listen. The game is hard. There's no difficulty slider, which annoyed me at first. But once you start getting upgrades, everything changes. I went back to areas that seemed impossible early on, and suddenly I was the nightmare. Poor enemies never stood a chance.

The exploration feels like Ori (one of my all-time favs) where you constantly see tantalizing areas just out of reach. My brain is now programmed to think "I'll be back for you" every time I spot a ledge I can't quite reach.

And those Denzel Stations that teleport you around? Lifesavers when you're backtracking through the map trying to find all the secrets. Because trust me, there are MANY.

The Verdict From Someone Who's Wasted 20+ Hours Already

Cookie Cutter: Overkill Edition is the perfect swan song for my Switch before the Switch 2 arrives adn makes me throw all my money at Nintendo again. It's bloody, it's beautiful, and it's brutally satisfying.

If you're a Metroidvania fan who doesn't mind a challenge (and some seriously over-the-top gore), this game is an uppercut straight to your gaming pleasure center.

Just... maybe don't play it around kids. Or people who get queasy easily. Or my mother, who walked in during a particularly graphic boss fight and now thinks I need therapy.

Worth every penny and every curse word I've screamed at my TV.
