Indiana Jones and the Great Circle hits PS5 – and holy crap, it's actually good

Lemme tell you something about Indiana Jones games. They've been a wasteland of disappointment for DECADES. Like, we're talking archaeological layers of garbage that would make Indy himself abandon the dig site.

The last time we got anything remotely playable was back when dinosaurs roamed the earth - The Fate of Atlantis and Last Crusade on friggin' MS-DOS. Remember those? If you're under 35, you probably don't. I was barely out of diapers when those came out, but somehow they've remained the gold standard while everything that followed was basically cursed treasure.

When Did Indy Games Become Such Hot Garbage?

Staff of Kings? The Infernal Machine? Pure trash. My cousin spent his allowance on one of these back in the day and didn't speak to his parents for a week. Poor kid.

But something miraculous has happened. After hitting Xbox and PC earlier, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has swung onto PlayStation 5, and I'm still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor.

It's GOOD. Like, legitimately good.

The Perfect Blend (Unlike Whatever Was in That Chalice in Last Crusade)

This game nails something that's eluded developers for years - it actually feels like you're playing an Indy movie. The cutscenes are brief but cinematic. The action flows naturally. I spent about 4 hours straight playing last night when I should've been finishing a work presentation. Worth it.

Set between Raiders and Last Crusade, you step into the weathered boots of everyone's favorite professor/tomb raider (sorry Lara, you know I love you too). The story revolves around teh mystery of the Great Circle, sending you globe-trotting in classic Indy fashion.

Seriously, Those Visuals Though...

MachineGames clearly worships at the altar of Spielberg. The attention to detail is insane - I literally gasped when I saw the overturned bookcase at Marshall College that referenced the opening of Fate of Atlantis. I feel stupid now admitting how much that little Easter egg delighted me, but whatever.

Troy Baker voices Indy, and close your eyes... you'd swear Harrison Ford was in the room with you. Every grunt, every sarcastic quip - it's perfect. The music swells at just the right moments, making those narrow escapes feel appropriately epic.

Punching Nazis Has Never Felt This Satisfying

Combat is where this game really shines. Hand-to-hand fighting delivers these meaty, satisfying thwacks that made me wince and grin simultaneously. You can grab improvised weapons - I knocked out a guard with a guitar and laughed so hard I scared my cat.

Guns exist but they're not the focus. This isn't Call of Duty: Archaeological Warfare. The real star is the bullwhip.

God. That whip.

Crack That Whip (Give the Past a Slip)

You can disarm enemies, sweep legs, crack it across faces, or use it to swing across gaps. It feels intuitive after about 15 minutes of practice. I spent way too long just whipping random objects because it's so damn satisfying.

The PS5 version has some cool exclusive outfits too - including the Temple of Doom getup which... let's be honest... is not Indy's best look but still nostalgic as hell.

And those haptics on the PS5 controller? When you're creeping through the jungle adn the controller starts vibrating randomly? I literally threw my controller the first time because it felt like spiders were crawling up my hands. My girlfriend has video. She won't delete it.

Not Perfect, But Who Is?

It's not the hardest game you'll ever play. Stealth sections feel a bit too forgiving - I accidentally walked right in front of a guard once and he just... stared at me blankly for like 3 seconds before reacting. Reminded me of my ex.

Some puzzles will have you stumped for a bit, but nothing that'll send you racing to YouTube for solutions. The whole package clocks in around 20 hours if you explore everything, which I absolutely did.

The Verdict: Worth Every Penny

After suffering through Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (we don't talk about Dial of Destiny in my house), this game feels like the perfect palate cleanser. It's the Indiana Jones film we deserved but never got.

Back in 2018, I met a guy at a convention who worked on one of the older Indy games. When I told him I was disappointed, his response: "already updating my resume." No need for that here - everyone involved should be proud.

This is, without a doubt, the best Indiana Jones game ever made. I'd stake my collection of rare antiquities on it... if I had any. Instead, I've got this game, which feels like treasure enough.
