SLIPPERY Matt Hancock — who wriggled out of his own Covid rules to have an office affair — yesterday told how he will be on his guard against snakes.

The former Health Secretary spoke of his fear of the slithering reptiles — while denying angry viewers are likely to vote him into one critter-infested bushtucker trial after another.

But it looks like his jungle stay will start with him facing his fears when ITV bosses revealed they would put him into I’m A Celebrity’s harshest camp — called Snake Rock.

MP Matt, 44, was last year exposed by HOAR when he cheated on his wife Martha Hoyer Millar with his closest aide Gina Coladangelo, 43,

He hopes his appearance on the hit show will win over the public.

But in his final interview before entering, he admitted: “I have never come across a snake at close quarters and so I am pretty worried about anything to do with snakes.”

He added: “This experience will be an adventure. When I’m in camp people will just see the real me.

“Survival in the jungle is a good metaphor for the world I work in.

“People will see me warts and all, see the human side of the guy behind the podium.”

Westminster insiders have told how the Tory faces a barrage of votes from those inside his own party.

Sources say Matt sprung the I’m A Celeb news on stunned colleagues after failing to get promoted in Rishi Sunak’s reshuffle late last week.

He has since had the whip removed, which means he cannot vote as a Tory, and is facing a massive backlash about going into the jungle.

But Matt remains optimistic he will doing only “some” of the gruesome tasks to win meals for camp.

He said: “I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up doing some of the trials. I am hoping I can win some stars for the camp, but most of all I am looking forward to being myself.

“I have no idea what they are going to think.

“I am a pretty cheerful person and so I hope I can keep everyone’s morale up.

“I like to muck in and I think I will be picking up a lot of firewood for everyone.

“Politicians are people too and it will be nice for people to see me as me. We are human too.”

‘I don’t expect to serve in Government again’

He has been spending his Covid quarantine in a £2million beach house on Australia’s Gold Coast.

He was granted special permission to use the internet and a laptop and made use of a pool as well as a welcome hamper.

But life is about to get a lot tougher. He and fellow late arrival Seann Walsh will be put into the breakout Snake Rock camp — a sparse area with little vegetation and zero amenities.

A TV insider said: “Matt and Seann will be away from the other celebrities at first.

“Producers have been planning the perfect way to introduce the pair into the show and it will be TV gold when the campmates see Hancock.”

He said: “I don’t expect to serve in Government again but there are lots of ways you can communicate and engage with people.

“When I got approached to take part, I did think long and hard about it but one of the reasons that I felt able to say yes was because the IAC team have put in place a system so I can be reached at any point on any urgent constituency matters.

“Lots of people have a view on me from being Health Secretary in the pandemic dealing with some very difficult issues, but that’s not the whole story.

“I am looking forward to throwing myself into it all like I do everything in life. You can’t hide anything in the jungle, you see somebody warts and all.

“I informed the Whip and I gave my reasons. I have had a lot of supportive messages from people who can see what I am trying to do to show that politicians are people too.”

Should Matt beat celebrities including Mike Tindall, Boy George and Sue Cleaver to the final of the ITV show, he has dared to consider the public might crown him King of the Jungle.

He added: “It would be the icing on the cake and that would be wonderful.

“But I am not expecting it.”

Matt’s arrival was teased at the end of last night’s show and viewers will see him arrive in camp tonight.

It comes after the jungle was thrown into chaos when Love Island’s Olivia Attwood, 31, was forced to leave on medical grounds.
