A GREET JOB, JILL

JILL TOMLINSON-HARDY signed up as a festive temp at The Card Factory while doing her Christmas shopping.

Seven years later and Jill, 57, of Nottingham, is still working for the company and now runs a store in the Langley Mill area of the city.

She says: “I saw a sign saying Festive Temps Needed and spoke to the store manager. Two days later, I went in for an interview and walked out with a job and uniform.

“I love working here. I have been promoted almost every year and it’s been the very best journey of my life.

“I would recommend working for The Card Factory to anyone. It’s fun, especially at Christmas, and is one big family.”

WAYS TO SPARKLE ’N’ SHINE

AROUND one in five Christmas temp workers get permanent jobs with their employer.

Charlotte Davies, at career networking site LinkedIn, says: “Seasonal work can be a great opportunity to get a foot in the door.”

Here she has some tips on how to stand out . . .

TREAT THE JOB LIKE A PERMANENT ROLE: Show the same professionalism and enthusiasm.

UNDERSTAND THE COMPANY: Speak to people in different departments to get to know the processes.

Showing you have a good understanding of how the business works and could hit the ground running if hired permanently helps.

NETWORK: Connect and engage with your co-workers to demonstrate your interest and commitment to the company and ensure you are front of mind for any long-term positions that become available.

You’re four times more likely to get hired this way than any other.

SHARE YOUR SUCCESSES: Show your employer you are proud of the work you are doing for them, by sharing and celebrating your achievements in person and on LinkedIn.

Make sure you tag the firm and your co-workers.

PREPARE FOR INTERVIEW, JUST IN CASE: At the end of your temporary contract, you may be asked to interview for an ongoing position.

Ensure you have prepared some answers to likely questions so you can shine.

IT IS CHILD’S PLAY

Area manager Karen Emery says: “I’ve been part of The Entertainer family for 20 years after joining in 2000 as a Christmas temp.

“I’m not alone in my career progression – with a can-do attitude, dedication and ambition, opportunities are there for the taking.”
