MOVE over McVitie’s – cheaper supermarket own-brand biscuits have beaten the iconic brand in taste tests.
The biggest seller of biscuits in the UK won only one of six categories in the Good Housekeeping test – and was well off the overall top spot.
Aldi and Asda were joint winners of best rich tea with their 29p and 30p packs landing a score of 74 out of 100, beating McVitie’s £1.19 pack.
Good Housekeeping said: “When it came to this classic choice, it was a double win.
“The cheapest winner, and a steal at just 29p a pack, Aldi’s biccies have a comforting, malty flavour and gentle sweetness.
“An equally thrifty pick, ASDA’s rich teas are subtly sweet with milky undertones.”
Top spot for custard creams went to M&S and the crown for bourbon creams handed to Co-op and Tesco.
McVitie’s – which accounts for 22 in every 100 biscuits sold in the UK – did get the best digestives. But M&S beat it to top chocolate digestive.
The best overall was Galaxy chocolate chip cookies with a score of 91 for the £1.49 pack. McVities own version came third in that category with 78.
Good Housekeeping said: “Top of the lot, Galaxy’s Chocolate Chip Cookies were not only best in class but the overall winner of our best biscuit taste test.
Their impressive score of 91/100 was achieved thanks to the infamous Galaxy chocolate flavour, which added a caramel-like taste to the golden cookies.”
The average Brit eats 500 biscuits a year.
