Clean up that Christmess – tackle pine needles, glitter and spills with our tips

FESTIVE fun can not only cost us a few spillages but a lot of cleaning products too.

I spoke to Henry Paterson, the senior operations executive at house cleaning service Housekeep, to get his top tips.

After the festivities come the cleaning, we give you our expert’s top tips on how to get rid of the Christmas mess and get your house shining again

Tree-rific mess: Henry says: “To clean up pine needles off carpet, apply some hand sanitiser to the area and leave overnight to loosen the sap adhesive. Brush it in the morning to lift up the needles, then vacuum them up. Use duct tape to collect any stragglers.”

My tip: You can get two bottles of selected hand sanitiser at superdrug.com for £10, saving you up to £3.98 if you buy two 500ml bottles of Defendol Advanced Formula Cleansing Hand Gel, RRP, £6.99.

Sparkly clean: Henry says: “If you have any stubborn glitter stuck to vinyl, wood, or laminate floor, wet a cloth, then dab and wipe the glitter up using static electricity. You can also use a tape-based lint roller for any type of floor, which will enable you to remove leftover glitter.”

My tip: A lint roller is £1 at Tesco, but you can currently buy one in the clearance sale at B&Q for just 50p.

Prosecc-ho, ho, ho: Henry says: “For white wine or prosecco spillages on carpet, try to blot the spillage as quickly as possible with a dry cloth or paper towel. Then use a mixture of two cups of warm water, one tablespoon of white vinegar and one tablespoon of washing up liquid. Apply a little at a time, take a clean cloth and use a sponging action on the stain until it starts to disappear.”

My tip: Instead of paying 97p for a 433ml bottle of Fairy Liquid at ASDA, buy a litre bottle of Magnum washing up liquid from Aldi for 68p. It does the job just as well.

Elbow grease: Henry says: “There are various ways to remove red wine stains from carpet. The most popular involves applying and blotting WD-40 on to the carpet to remove the majority of the stain. You should then use a steam cleaner to remove the WD-40.”

My tip: The Beldray 10-in-1 Hand-held Steam Cleaner is £24 at Wilko, but you can currently buy it for £19.96 at Asda.
