Cut the costs of caring for your newborn baby with our cash-saving tips

Check out these little helpers for slashing your spend.

DOUBLE UP: Did you know baby products can easily be used by Mum too? Not only is the price generally lower, but it makes Mum’s life easier and saves buying extra items.

Dr Stefanie Williams, of the Eudelo dermatology clinic in London, says: “Products formulated for delicate baby skin are super-nourishing for Mum too. Aveeno Baby Daily Care Lotion (£5.99, Boots) is gentle enough to be used every day.

“It’s designed for babies with normal to dry skin, but great for adults with eczema-prone skin too, as long as their skin is not prone to acne or rosacea.”

My tip: I love using Johnson’s Baby Oil (£2.50 for 150ml, Boots) as a cheap and easy make-up remover, plus it’s far cheaper than oil-based cleansers such as Sanctuary Melt Away Cleansing Oil (£12 for 150ml). It also works as cuticle oil.

A GOOD START: Some mums will be eligible for the NHS Healthy Start scheme, a Government initiative that offers weekly vouchers to spend on basics such as milk, fresh and frozen fruit and veg, infant formula milk and vitamins. You may qualify if you are pregnant and under 18, have children under the age of four or if you are on benefits. See

CLUB TOGETHER: Certain clubs and schemes have free help packs. Sign up for’s Newborn pack, which includes nappies, baby wipes, nappy rash cream, money-off vouchers and offers and advice from experts such as the Lullaby Trust and British Pregnancy Advisory Service. has a scheme providing an app and gift packs with information and freebies. And register at to be sent samples from baby brands.
