HAVING a grown-up bedroom is a dream for most kids.

We all know how much time youngsters spend in their rooms.

And psychologist Dr Peter Marshall says it is important for them to have that space as they figure out who they are.

Here are my tips so you can give your child’s room a makeover on a budget.

Looks dreamy: A four-poster single bed will set you back £140 at Argos. But you can make one yourself for £80 or so by picking up some square-planed timber from Wickes.

Another nice trick is to create the illusion of a headboard, either using some paint or with a mandala wall sticker from Etsy at £13.53.

Dress it up: Instagrammers have been using Ikea’s floating Ekby Alex drawers, £35, as a space-saving dressing table. Argos’s velvet ottoman, £18, doubles up as a stool and handy storage.

And you can fashion a vanity mirror by attaching Shein’s £14.99 light bulbs to Dunelm’s £10 round hanging mirror. Much cheaper than pre-made versions at around £75.

Accessories are a simple way to update a room

Fancy that: Turn a corner into a mini walk-in wardrobe. Hartleys’ £19.99 cube unit is perfect for displaying bags and shoes — and is £9 cheaper than Ikea’s Kallax option. Head to eBay for a £10 wall-mounted jewellery holder and a pink clothes rail for £11.89. Ideal for hanging party dresses.

SAVE: £9.01 on a unit

Not half bad: A room divider will give tween room-mates some privacy. I love Amazon’s floral hanging divider, £9.99. That is a major saving on Wayfair’s similar £25.99 buy.

SAVE: £16 on a divider

Little wonders: Accessories are a simple way to update a room. B&M has candles and photo frames for just £1, small succulents for £2 and a £7.99 furry rug. Poundland’s £2 peg board is great for storing pens, cards and pictures, while a near-identical version at Ikea costs £12.
