I bought Lidl's £20 fire pit and my neighbours think I'm mental - here's the truth

God. I have a confession to make. I'm that person who gets weirdly excited about garden accessories. Like, embarrassingly so. Last weekend I dragged my boyfriend to Lidl at 7:43am because I'd seen their new fire pit was hitting stores on April 17th and I NEEDED it before they sold out.

The woman at teh checkout gave me this look. You know the one. "Another garden-obsessed millennial who's gonna use this thing exactly twice."

The £20 steal that's making my richer friends jealous

So here's the deal - Lidl's Tepro Fire Pit is selling for £19.99, which is basically highway robbery compared to what other shops are charging. My sister paid £55 for something similar from Argos last summer (and never lets me forget it).

It's a square steel pit with this minimalist design that actually looks way more expensive than it is. My neighbor Tom asked if it was from some fancy outdoor living store. His response when I told him the price: "Already texting my wife to get one."

What's the catch?

Listen. For twenty quid, you're not getting all the bells and whistles. The Argos version (a whopping £50!) comes with a mesh lid and grill for BBQing. And it folds up, which I admit would be nice for storing in my pathetically small garden shed.

Tesco's offering sits in the middle at £24.99 with their Hortus Metal Square Firepit BBQ. For that extra fiver you get both a lid and grill.

I feel stupid now because I didn't even check Tesco before impulse-buying. Story of my life.

The night I almost set my garden fence on fire

Back in 2018, I bought one of those cheap disposable BBQs and nearly burned down my fence. Poor Mrs. Jenkins next door nearly had a heart attack. So I appreciate that this Lidl pit has heat-resistant coating and comes with a poker for safely moving things around.

We tested it out last weekend with some friends. Three bottles of wine later, we were still sitting around it at 1am. Worth. Every. Penny.

The online stock sold out faster than concert tickets, which is why I was at Lidl embarrassingly early on launch day.

Other summer bargains making me broke

While I was there, I spent another £70 on their Grillmeister Two-Burner Gas Barbecue. My partner wasn't thrilled about that unexpected purchase... but when I showed him the identical-looking one at Robert Dyas for £149.99, he suddenly thought I was a shopping genius.

I also grabbed their £1.99 shower gel that's supposedly a dupe for the Lush one that costs £8.50. It smells identical! Or at least it did after my third gin and tonic.

Sneaky ways to save at Lidl (that my editor bet me $20 I wouldn't share)

If you're as cheap as me, hit Lidl between 7-8am when they first open. That's when they mark down meats and bread. I've scored salmon fillets for 30% off that were perfectly fine.

Their booze is ridiculously good value. I spent £4K renovating my kitchen last year but still buy Lidl's knockoff gin because it tastes exactly the same as the fancy stuff.

The "Middle of Lidl" is dangerous territory for your wallet. I went in for milk last month and came out with a wetsuit. I don't even swim in the ocean.

You can actually check what's coming to the Middle of Lidl on their website before you go. They refresh the stock every Thursday and Sunday.

Same goes for their "Pick of the Week" food deals that drop every Thursday.

Anyway. If you want this fire pit, don't wait around. At this price, they'll be gone in a flash... and then you'll be the one getting up at stupid o'clock on a Saturday to fight other garden-obsessed people for one.
