TRADING in your old phone is a simple way to make some extra Christmas cash.
Mobile owners have missed out on £6.9billion by just binning them, a survey by YouGov and Vodafone reveals.
So if you’re one of the 88 per cent of people who have never recycled one, here are some tips to help you trade and cash in . . .
KNOW THE VALUE: Apple phones are great for holding their value — an iPhone X could bag you £220 if you trade it in. Android phones can also get you plenty of pounds — a Samsung S9, for example, could earn you as much as £149. Trading in one of these phones and buying a refurbished older model could mean a great little profit before Christmas. You can always upgrade during the January sales if you really miss it.
CHECK WITH YOUR PROVIDER: For an immediate upgrade, check with the contract provider. Most have a recycling or trade-in option and the value can be higher for long-term and loyal customers. O2 has some very good rates as it is on a mission to go green. Vodafone has a trade-in tool via its MyVodafone app that gives an instant value for your phone and guarantees the saving if buying the new iPhone 12.
USE A COMPARISON SITE: Sellmymobile.com is very popular. It’s also worth checking out comparemymobile.com, mazumamobile.com, musicmagpie.co.uk and compareandrecycle.co.uk.
CHECK INDIVIDUAL TRADE-IN FIRMS: Sometimes companies such as CeX offer a better price for a phone, and they also give a higher value voucher for some items such as a games console. For example, a Google Pixel 3a 64GB is worth £105, or you could get a £140 voucher.
INSURE TO BE SURE: If using a comparison site where you send in your old phone, make sure your delivery is insured. If not and your phone is lost in the post, you are throwing money away. Signed-for delivery insures the contents for up to £50 but the cost depends on phone weight.
