MARTIN Lewis says Brits should not call for the rich to face higher taxes as it punishes the wrong people — including him.

The MoneySavingExpert founder, 50, said forcing the wealthy to pay more will not affect those who avoid their obligations here by moving abroad.

Martin Lewis says demanding high earners pay more taxes feels unfair

Martin told BBC’s 5Live: “I believe tax is the cost of living in a legitimate social, civil society and therefore I pay tax.

“One of the great difficulties I have with this debate is people say we should tax the rich more because of all the rich people who don’t pay tax.

“As one of the rich people who does pay his tax, I always go, ‘OK, so because I am doing everything right, you’re going to punish me for the people who aren’t’.”

Government stats show the top ten per cent of earners paying income tax contribute 60 per cent of all income tax.
