MORRISONS has beaten posh supermarket Waitrose and been crowned the winner of this year’s blind taste test for champagne.
Which? magazine compared supermarket own label and top-selling big-name non-vintage champagnes priced up to £36 in the test.
Lidl, Aldi, Sainsbury’s and M&S were all ranked highly for their wines, but it was Morrison’s Adrien Chopin Brut Champagne which was chosen as this year’s winner.
Which? judges described it as “golden champagne with stewed apple aromas, rich flavours and a hint of sweetness”, meaning it was this year’s top-scorer.
It’s only £18 for a 75cl bottle from Morrisons, making it one of its cheapest bottles of fizz on its shelves.
Morrisons’ champagne ranges from £16 to £50, depending on the brand.
Waitrose’s Brut Champagne was placed second and given a Which? Best Buy accreditation after the judging panel liked its “ripe red apples and apple blossom” character, meaning that it made it an ideal party fizz.
Waitrose’s champagne is a bit more pricey at £19.99 for a 75cl for its brut, but its champagne is also one of its cheapest ones on sale.
As Waitrose has far more posh products on its shelves, its priciest champagne is a Dom Pérignon Vintage Champagne, which is on sale for £150.
In third place but not quite achieving Which? Best Buy status was Moet & Chandon’s Imperial Brut Champagne.
The panel said they loved the bubbles thanks to its “candied notes, mellow aromas, crisp acidity, and a cashew-nut finish”. However, one expert called it a “little bland”.
As Moet is a brand of champagne, it’s on offer at a variety of different supermarkets at different prices.
Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s sell it for £29 per 75cl bottle, Waitrose has it on sale currently for £27.50 and Morrisons sells it for £36.
Harry Rose, Editor of Which? Magazine, said: “Your Christmas might be a bit more low key this year, but there is no reason to scrimp on the bubbly and we’re delighted that you can enjoy this season’s best fizz for only £18.
“Whether you opt for outstanding champagne at a great price or fancy paying a little more for a premium brand, our expert picks will make sure that whatever you’re doing this year, it won’t lack any sparkle.”
