CHRISTMAS is creeping up fast!
So I asked you Savers how you save the pennies in time for the big day. Wendy Turner, 67, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, below, replied with her top tips . . .
Arts ’n’ crafts. Wendy says: “Get the children to make handmade decorations and cards. It will give them something fun to do and get rid of their lockdown boredom.”
My tip: If you have the card and decorations in the house already, that’s great. If not, you can buy a pack of 20 mini festive friends Christmas cards from studio.co.uk for 99p.
Cupboard clear-out. Wendy says: “Sort out your cupboards and sell outgrown kids’ clothes and toys on Facebook or eBay.”
My tip: Second-hand shopping is becoming more popular. Take lots of photos and give as much detail as possible in the description to increase your chances of selling.
Festive fun. Wendy says: “Make small gifts and crafts rather than spending lots of money. Knitted Christmas hats on Terry’s Chocolate Oranges are festive and fun.”
My tip: A Terry’s Chocolate Orange is £1.95 at Sainsbury’s but just £1 at Tesco — and they are often discounted to 75p.
Bargain bakes. Wendy says: “Bake your own small Christmas cakes and treats. They can be given as gifts and are especially nice for elderly neighbours who are alone over Christmas.”
My tip: A tin of shortbread is £4 at Tesco, but you could make plenty more for much less. All you need is butter, caster sugar and plain flour. Search online for an easy recipe.
Check your list. Wendy says: “Prepare menus for Christmas and make shopping lists. This prevents impulse buys.”
My tip: If you can, do your shop online. You’ll only search for what you need and won’t be distracted by other products in-store.
