Salt is a cheap cleaning aid already in everyone’s cupboard — we share tips on some new uses for it

IT is being touted as great for sanitising face masks.

I’ve always used salt as a cheap cleaning aid but even I have learned some new uses for it recently. Here are some to try . . .

Salt works well on wine stains — but act fast to avoid damage

WINE WOES: If you spill a glass of red on the carpet, do not dilly-dally — it pays to act quickly.

Blot as much of it as you can with paper towels then cover the stain with salt.

Leave for around ten minutes for the salt to soak up the wine and dry out.

Then hoover it all up.

FRESH FRIDGE: It is recommended that you clean your fridge every three to six months to avoid a nasty whiff.

Get rid of those stubborn stains by scrubbing with half a cup of salt mixed into two litres of hot water.

SPONGE SPRUCE: Your washing-up sponges can get grubby quickly, especially during lockdown when they are being used more often.

But do not reach for a new one just yet. Soak the old sponge overnight in a bucket of water and salt.

You should mix a quarter of a cup of salt into one litre of water.

Leave the sponge to dry and it will be good to go again.

STAIN ZAPPER: With the kids playing in the garden or in the park, you will likely come across a few nasty grass stains come laundry time.

Do not fork out on expensive stain removers such as Vanish — instead squeeze lemon juice all over the mark, then apply a layer of salt.

Give the stain a rub then wash as usual.

SHOWER POWER: If you find yourself standing in too much water for your liking while in the shower, the chances are your drain is blocked.

You can clear it with one cup of salt mixed with one cup of baking soda and half a cup of white vinegar.

Simply pour this solution down the drain, leave for ten minutes, then follow with boiling water.
