SPENDING so long indoors over the past year has probably taken its toll on your sofa.

But splashing out on a new one will likely leave a big dent in your wallet.

Thrifty ways to update your old sofa so you don’t have to fork out for a new one

Thankfully, there are some thrifty ways to update an old couch without replacing it. Try these to cushion the blow.

CLEAN SWEEP: If your current sofa is in dire need of a good clean, you may be panicking about the price of a professional cleaning service. Give it a go yourself without the cost. I love the Facebook group Mrs Hinch Made Me Do It.

I recently spotted a fantastic sofa transformation that was the result of cleaning with household goods. Mum Nicole Whitaker shared how she used Vanish stain remover on really bad marks and the big cushions, before using washing-up liquid and warm water on smaller cushions at the back.

She put all the covers in the washing machine for an hour — on a 1600 spin at 60C — before leaving them on the radiators to dry. She then gave everything a touch-up with Febreze for a seriously refreshed result. Impressive.

GOT YOU COVERED: If you don’t mind a bit of a DIY project and want to overhaul your sofa completely, you may want to consider re-upholstering.
It needn’t be scary and you can do it yourself with any fabric that takes your fancy to give the lounge a lift. Crushed velvet is popular with influencers at the moment and you can pick up a silver-grey style at justfabrics.co.uk for £24.75 per metre, usually £38.

THROW-STOPPERS: Whether or not you re-upholster or just give your sofa a thorough clean, you can spruce up dull interiors with fun scatter cushions or throws. I love the pom-pom cushions sold at Wilko for £8 each — plus they’re far cheaper than similar versions sold at John Lewis for £18. You can get a well-matched pom-pom knit throw at Dunelm for £22.50, down from £45.

SAVING: £10 on cushions and £22.50 on throw
