AS the weather gets warmer during lockdown, the chances are you will spend a lot more time in the garden.
Outdoor furniture can often look tired and worn — but you don’t need to replace your trusty sets. Simply give them some thrifty TLC.
Now is the perfect time to clean up and revive pieces that need a boost.
Rustle them back into shape: If your iron patio furniture has become a little dull and rusty, gently rub off any rust with wire wool and brush away loose dirt.
Give everything a good scrub down and clean with soapy water. Then sand down any rough spots. You can touch up any leftover rusty areas with enamel paint. I like Wilko’s smooth white metal paint, £7.
Rattan revival: When it comes to rattan sets, use a hand-held vacuum to remove any dust, soil or leaves. Use an old toothbrush on stubborn areas. Clean with warm, soapy water. Once spick and span, put the furniture outside or in a well-ventilated area to dry.
Wood you look at this: Is the wooden garden furniture looking silvered with age? Get it back to the original colour by using a specialist restorer. I like Cuprinol’s garden furniture restorer, £17.50 for a litre at Homebase. Simply paint a layer on and the wood will start to lighten in colour. Use an abrasive pad to work it into the wood and leave it to work for 15 minutes, then wash off.
Soft touch: Outdoor cushions are often the first items looking a bit worse for wear. For a basic clean, remove the covers (if they are non-removable you will need to spot-clean using a mild detergent) and place them in the washing machine. Use a low cycle with a mild cleaning detergent.
To prevent mould, make sure your covers are completely dry before inserting any foam inners. Stop dirt building up by applying an outdoor fabric protector, which will make your cushions easier to clean in the future. I like Scotchgard outdoor fabric protector, £7.48 on amazon.co.uk.
