Trespass store in Aylesbury closing TOMORROW - locals gutted as 'everything must go' sale ends

Another one bites the dust. I'm getting tired of reporting on these closures, but here we are again.

The Trespass store tucked away in Friars Square Shopping Centre in Aylesbury is shutting its doors for good tomorrow (May 18). I actually bought my waterproof jacket there back in 2019 - lasted me through three miserable British winters and counting. Now I'll have to find somewhere else when it finally gives up the ghost.

The locals are absolutely crushed

Regulars are proper devastated about this one. One shopper I spoke with yesterday was nearly in tears, telling me they've "bought hiking gear and waterproofs here for years" and had "no idea where we'll go now." Bit dramatic maybe, but I get it.

The store had built up quite the reputation locally. Customers described it as "absolutely fabulous" (their words, not mine) and praised staff who apparently always took "the time to ensure customers are well looked after & accurately informed."

Listen. When's the last time you heard someone praise retail staff like that? Most people can barely look up from teir phones long enough to say thanks these days.

Why is everything disappearing from our high streets?

This isn't some isolated incident. Trespass has been quietly culling stores across the country like nobody's business. They closed six shops in 2023, and by my count, at least 12 more have vanished in 2024 alone.

Coventry? Gone. Norwich? Sayonara. Even the Middlesbrough branch shut down after being open for just TWO YEARS. Talk about a short-lived experiment.

The company's blaming it on "falling customer numbers" which is corporate-speak for "not enough of you are buying our £70 waterproof trousers anymore."

Last chance for a bargain (if you're quick enough)

There's still an "everything must go" sale happening, but you've literally got hours left to take advantage. I popped in yesterday afternoon and the place was looking pretty picked over - mostly odd sizes and those weird neon hiking socks nobody actually wants.

Worth a look though if you need some outdoor gear and don't mind the slightly depressing atmosphere of a dying store.

Aylesbury's becoming a ghost town

Poor Aylesbury. The hits just keep coming.

Dobbies garden centre? Gone a few months back. Marshall Motor Group? Shuttered in March. And now Trespass. I've got friends who live there who say the high street feels more like a museum of "remember when we had shops here?" than an actual shopping destination.

It's happening everywhere though. My hometown lost three shops just last summer, and the only things that seem to open anymore are vape stores and charity shops.

The retail apocalypse continues

Beales - which has been around since Queen Victoria was on the throne - is closing its final store in Poole after 140+ years of trading. That's older than most countries!

New Look is apparently planning to axe about a quarter of its 364 shops. Stores in Gateshead, St Austell and Porth are already in closing down mode.

The rumor mill says they're speeding up closures because of tax changes in the Autumn Budget. Businesses can't catch a break, can they?

I walked through my local shopping centre last weekend... half the units were empty. Makes you wonder what our high streets will even look like in 5 years. Online shopping is convenient and all, but sometimes you just want to try on a jacket before dropping £100 on it, you know?

Anyway. If you're in Aylesbury and need some discounted hiking gear, you've got about 24 hours left. After that, it's another empty shopfront with a "To Let" sign gathering dust.
