LET’S raise a glass to the bank holiday weekend. Bar-hopping is not an option right now but you can get into the spirit by mixing your own cocktails at home — for a lot less than you would pay out on the razz.
You need not buy a cabinet full of booze either — these ideas are all based around vodka, which you may well already have . . .
ESPRESSO, SO GOOD: Whip up a quick, cheap alternative to the iconic espresso martini — using instant coffee. Soak some granules in water and mix into a strong paste. Pop ice into a shaker and pour in one part vodka and one part coffee liqueur such as Kahlua, then your coffee paste, and shake well before slowly pouring into a martini glass — if you have one. Let the froth settle and enjoy.
AN APPLE A DAY: I love an apple juice — but add some punch by creating your own Appletini. All you need is 50ml vodka, 50ml cloudy apple juice, 1tsp lemon juice and 1tsp maple syrup. Shake all the ingredients in an ice-filled shaker — or two glasses held together, top to top — until the outside feels frosty to the touch. Strain into a glass — a martini one, if you have — and garnish with apple slices.
COSMO IT MAKES SENSE: Fix yourself a Cosmopolitan by pouring 50ml vodka — if you have orange or lemon-flavoured, even better — into a shaker with 1tbsp orange liqueur such as Cointreau, 1 tbsp lime juice and 50ml cranberry juice. Fill the shaker with ice then shake well. Strain into a martini glass, if you have, then garnish with orange zest.
FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE: Feeling decadent? Treat yourself to a White Russian. You need 50ml vodka, 25ml coffee liqueur and 1tbsp single cream. No need for a shaker with this one — just pour your ingredients into a tumbler filled with ice, gently stir and enjoy. Lovely.
