School uniforms can cost a small fortune – particularly if you have more than one child.

Hard-up households will be able to save hundreds on uniforms under a new law.

Guidance that comes into effect in September will means schools have to ensure that uniforms are affordable for everyone.

The move is a welcome relief to families facing an average cost of £101 to kit each child out in a secondary school uniform, according to data from the Schoolwear Association.

But if you can save hundreds if you opt for high street versions of your school clobber, rather than branded options.

And at the cheapest stores, you can even get an entire uniform for a fiver.
