ALL shops could still reopen in 12 days time even if the coronavirus alert state is not lowered, No10 has insisted.
Downing Street revealed the PM’s determination to press on with his roadmap to unlock Britain.
It came as it emerged the nation’s four chief medical officers have now wrestled control of setting the new Covid-19 alert rate.
Tension is mounting between ministers and government scientists after some warned Boris Johnson is unlocking too fast.
The four top medics for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are still refusing to move the alert status done from 4 to 3 – which was previously a condition for lockdown restrictions to ease.
Boris stated in his original plan that the newly formed Joint Biosecurity Centre would decide which of the five levels the country was at.
But the PM’s spokesman confirmed: “In terms of the setting of the alert level, it is ultimately for the chief medical officers, informed by data collated and analysed by the JBC.
“The JBC’s function is to provide analysis and advice.”
The spokesman also insisted that the decision on reopening all non-essential retail is “not dependent” on the alert state descending down to level 3.
Under the PM’s roadmap timetable, they will be given the green light to open their doors again on June 15.
Critics also pointed out that the average number of daily deaths has now stropped falling and is instead flatlining at the 300 mark.
After the usual weekend reporting lull, the death toll was back up to 324.
