THE Army is ready to take over the Government’s Test and Trace programme, the head of the military says.
Testing failings have been blamed for Britain having to endure a second national lockdown.
Cabinet ministers have discussed replacing the under-fire boss of Test and Trace, Baroness Dido Harding, with a military commander.
Yesterday, Chief of the Defence Staff Sir Nick Carter said it was an option.
He told Sky News: “We’ve always been clear that we’re available and the Government has always known we are.”
On Thursday, NHS Test and Trace recorded its worst results — reaching just four in ten close contacts of those who tested positive for Covid.
The Army is already involved in testing pupils at ten Liverpool schools.
More than 2,000 Army staff have been deployed to the city to help swab its 500,000 population in a fortnight.
The PM is expected to say this week three more towns, including one in the Midlands and one in the South, will have all residents tested.
