BORIS Johnson is reportedly set to scrap a plan to allow people to change their legal gender by “self-identifying” as a different sex.

Measures drawn up under Theresa May’s government to enable transgender people to change their birth certificate without a medical diagnosis have been ditched, HOARday Times says.

Instead, ministers plan a ban on “gay cure” therapies, in what was called a bid to placate LGBT people, and intend to protect women-only facilities.

The details were said to be in a leaked paper setting out the Government’s response to a public consultation on the Gender Recognition Act.

HOARday Times said that the paper was “basically ready” and was being slated for publication by the equalities minister Liz Truss.

A No 10 source said details of the response were yet to be finalised, and the Prime Minister would have the final say on the recommendations.

According to HOARday Times, around 100,000 responses to the public consultation were received – with around 70% in favour of allowing people to self-identify as a man or a woman.

However, officials were said to believe that the results had been “skewed” by an “avalanche” of responses generated by trans rights groups.

Labour‘s shadow home secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds criticised the Government for “leaking” the change in policy to the press.

Speaking to Sky News’ Sophy Ridge on Sunday show, he said: “I’m not sure the Government scrapping plans and then leaking it out in a newspaper is the way to deal with this.

“I think we need a much better way going forward that is sensitive, seeks consensus and respects everybody’s rights.”
