BRITAIN turned the screw on the EU yesterday by announcing they are “intensifying” trade talks with the US.

In a stark contrast with the current status of EU talks, Trade Secretary Liz Truss announced the start of the fifth round of negotiations with the US.

Talks with the EU are on life support after Brussels’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier and the UK’s Lord Frost failed to agree a plan for getting the sides back to the negotiating table.

Boris Johnson has said he will only reopen talks if there is a “fundamental change of approach” from Brussels ahead of the end of the Brexit transition period on December 31.

But last night France’s Europe Minister Clement Beaune insisted there will be “no new approach” from the EU.

In an attempt to turn up the pressure on the EU, Ms Truss yesterday announced the UK is “intensifying negotiations so we are in a good position to move forward after the US election”.

She added: “We want a deal that delivers for all parts of the UK and is forward-leaning in modern areas like tech and services.”

Downing Street hopes that advancing talks with the US will soften the EU’s approach to trade talks amid fears that Britain will undercut European imports with cheap American goods.

But yesterday the EU stood firm, and even swiped out at the UK’s negotiating tactics.

Asked whether the EU will compromise to secure a Brexit deal, a spokesman for Michel Barnier said: “This is question 101 for students in international negotiations.

“I think it’s pretty obvious in order to come to an agreement both sides need to meet.

“And this is also obviously the case in this negotiation.”

And last night Emmanuel Macron’s Europe minister Clement Beaune said: “It is up to them to tell us now, beyond tactics, if they want to continue negotiating. We are ready for it.”

It comes after Boris Johnson’s tough stance last week triggered a shift in the EU’s position
