Officials are working “at pace” on a rescue plan but warn it may not be ready until November.

Households will get emergency help from next month with average bills set to be capped at £2,500 but there is no such mechanism for firms.

The PM’s spokesperson said yesterday the delay was not because of the death of the late Queen.

They said: “There is not a price cap system for businesses, we are having to build a brand new system to deliver this support.

“We will confirm details of the scheme next week.

“Support will come in parallel with households.

“The scheme will support businesses with their October energy bills, and that includes backdating if necessary.”

Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng is expected to deliver a mini-budget next week, as officials continue to thrash out the details of how it will work.

Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, said businesses need urgent clarity or face ruin.

Aid details are set to be confirmed next week.
