DOMINIC Raab will this week bring forward new “bolt on” measures to make British law supreme to the controversial human rights act.

The Justice Secretary will vow to stop criminals from escaping deportation by claiming they have a right to be with their family.

Justice Secretary Dominic Raab

He wants to use a new law to close the loophole under Article 8 of the ECHR – but won’t scrap the hated act altogether.

Sources close to Mr Raab say that one option under serious consideration is an additional rule which declares that anyone convicted of a serious crime would be unable to use the right to family life as a defence.

And those who face deportation may have to provide more evidence that it would tear apart their family.

He’ll also add in safeguards to ensure that article 10 – the right to freedom of expression can’t just be steamrolled by the rights to privacy.

And it will also make clear the values of freedom of the press.

But there’s an ongoing row on what to call it.

Mr Raab said to favour dubbing it the British Bill of Rights, but others want to call it the Human Rights Act 2022.

A consultation on the plans are expected later this week.
