The Commons report comes months after HS2 got the PM’s green light.

It casts doubts on the Department for Transport’s ability to deliver it.

MPs are not convinced that Whitehall and project bosses have the “skills and capability they need”.

Public Accounts Committee members asked why HS2 chief exec Mark Thurston won a £46,000 bonus on top of his £605,350 salary despite costs almost doubling.

Civil servant Bernadette Kelly and officials were also criticised after their committee appearances “raised questions”.

PAC chair Meg Hillier MP warned that HS2 is “massively over budget”.

Institute of Economic Affairs transport head Richard Wellings called it “a lucrative gravy train”.

He said: “This damning report hardly inspires confidence in the management of the scheme going forward. It is not too late to cancel HS2 before even more taxpayers’ money is wasted.”
