DOWNING Street faced questions over whether it covered up the health of Britain’s top civil servant after it emerged he had coronavirus at the same time as Boris Johnson.

Cabinet Secretary Sir Mark Sedwill was diagnosed with the virus in early April – meaning almost every senior person in charge of the UK’s coronavirus response had the illness in the same fortnight.

Downing Street confirmed Sir Mark Sedwill had coronavirus at the same time as Boris Johnson despite insisting he was fine

Sir Mark, 55, attended a meeting with the PM, Health Secretary Matt Hancock and chief medical officer Chris Whitty the week before. All four caught the virus.

No10 kept the public in the dark over Sir Mark’s positive diagnosis, despite being asked about his health on a daily basis by journalists.

At the time Downing Street simply said he was fine or “working as normal”.

It raised serious questions about the Government’s reliability and transparency.

The PM’s spokesman said he had only become aware of Sir Mark’s diagnosis when informed by a journalist.

A source said the symptoms were only ever “very mild”.
