THE EU last night threatened Britain with a trade war over Boris Johnson’s vow to ignore its sausage blockade.

Top eurocrat Maros Sefcovic said the bloc was ready to slap tariffs and quotas on British goods if the Prime Minister did not back down.

Tempers have flared over a EU ban on exports of chilled meats from Britain to Northern Ireland, still technically part of the European single market.

Rules were relaxed for six months post-Brexit but are due to be enforced.

No10 has threatened to ignore any restriction if a new deal is not reached.

Relations plummeted to a new low as talks in London broke up yesterday without a deal.

Eurocrats say the UK is failing to respect the rule of law.

Mr Sefcovic warned: “Our patience really is wearing very, very thin. Quotas and tariffs could come into place.”

Brexit guru Lord David Frost accused the bloc of “causing disruption” with an ”extremely purist” approach to applying last year’s Brexit trade deal.

Both sides are courting US president Joe Biden’s support after he flew into Britain for the G7 summit.

But the White House looks set to sit on the fence with national security adviser Jake Sullivan saying: “Whatever way they find to proceed must fundamentally protect the gains of the Good Friday Agreement.”
