DAVID Blunkett refused to throw his support behind Jeremy Corbyn as Britons head to the polls today as 15 other former Labour MPs said voters shouldn’t back him.

The Labour veteran, who served as Home Secretary under Tony Blair, preivously said he “despairs” for his party under Corbyn because of its crisis involving anti-Semitism and “thuggery”.

David Blunkett wouldn’t back Corbyn ahead of the poll today
The former Home Secretary’s intervention came after 15 other ex-Labour MPs urged Brits not to vote for Corbyn

Asked if he wanted Corbyn to be Prime Minister yesterday, Blunkett told BBC World At One: “I’m not going to do or say anything that will damage members of the Labour Party being elected tomorrow.

“I believe that a phalanx of really good Labour MPs would ensure that if Jeremy were leading a coalition then he would be moderated in a way that was in line with his own social democratic views.”

Blunkett’s intervention came as 15 former Labour MPs launched a blistering attack on Corbyn, saying he was “not fit to be Prime Minister”.

In their critical open letter, the signatories warned that they believed the Labour leader would deliver the opposite of a “safer, fairer society” and criticised his record on extremism and national security.

CORBYN RISK

They declared the party as no longer being the one they supported all their lives and said the risk of Corbyn getting the keys to No 10 is “too great”.

Former ministers including Tom Harris, Ian Austin and Ivan Lewis put their names to the savage message.

Others included Mike Gapes, Anne Coffey, and John Woodcock.

They accused the hard-left party boss of having sided with Britains political enemies from the IRA to Russia.

And they warn Mr Corbyns failure to stamp out the anti-Jewish racism in his own party makes him unfit to lead Britain.

The group of MPs are all part of the new anti-extremism group called Mainstream.

Two more former MPs Jim Dowd and Tom Levitt are the latest MPs to sign up to it.

The advert read: Everyone wants a safer, fairer society. But in this election the Labour Party is set to deliver the opposite.

We were all lifelong Labour voters and all former Labour MPs.

“We are voting for different parties at this election, but we have all come to the difficult decision not to vote Labour.”

Today, huge queues of voters have been pictured outside polling stations as turnout looks to have been unaffected by the chilly winter weather.

And as Corbyn cast his vote in Islington this morning, he was accosted by a protester dressed as Sesame Street character Elmo, who had to be restrained by police.
