Fire brigades have spent £17,000 decorating engines in LGBT rainbow colours

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service spent £4,320 and Dorset & Wiltshire shelled out £3,390, figures reveal.

The Suffolk service spent £2,284 on a design incorporating a rainbow, a freedom of information request shows.

A further £35,000 on rainbow merchandise such as flags was spent nationwide

Tom Ryan of the TaxPayers’ Alliance blasted: “Taxpayers are being ripped off in the rush to be right-on.

“Fire chiefs must realise that expensive rainbow wrappings do nothing to deliver the heroic life-saving services that everyone relies on.

“Their focus should be on fighting fires not culture wars.”

Oxfordshire County Council said its paintwork for an older vehicle helped towards its “equality, diversity and inclusion” objectives.

Dorset & Wilts said its decoration was “beyond its operational” and rainbow colours were chosen “to promote inclusivity”.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue said the move was a “relatively cheap way to advertise”.

The rainbow flag is a symbol of LGBT diversity and is seen at Pride events worldwide.

It emerged earlier this year that NHS hospitals have spent thousands painting pedestrian crossings in the rainbow colours of the LGBT movement.
