At a bleak press conference last night Mr Johnson pulled the trigger on fresh restrictions to stem the spread of Omicron.

From 6am next Wednesday people will be required to show they’re double-jabbed or have tested negative for crowded venues like clubs, stadiums and festivals.

The move incensed many Conservative MPs who have long been dead against vaccine passports.

Senior Tory Ben Bradley describe Covid certificates as “ineffective and discriminatory”, while colleague Simon Jupp agreed they were “divisive”.

Red Waller Dehenna Davison fumed: “I have long opposed vaccine passports, and so will vote against their introduction next week.

To me, the evidence we have been presented with does not justify further restrictions on liberties. ‘Just in case’ simply doesn’t cut it.”

At least 60 Tory MPs could revolt against the PM when vaccine passports are tabled in the Commons next week.

Lockdown-hating MP Steve Baker said it was “vital” MPs vote against. But they’ll likely be rammed through with Labour votes after Sir Keir Starmer said he’d back the government.

Tory MPs are also nervous after Mr Johnson hinted at mandatory vaccination for un-vaxxed Brits.

The PM said: “I dont believe we can keep going indefinitely with restrictions on people’s way of life, just because a substantial proportion of the population sadly still has not got vaccinated.

“We are going to have to have a national conversation about the way forward.”

But last night MPs already started to hit back at the suggestion, with Michael Gove’s personal private secretary, Angela Richardson saying: “I can say categorically that compulsory vaccinations are a step too far. “

Health Sec Sajid Javid today appeared to rule out such a move, calling vaccine passports “unethical”.
