POLITICIANS and parents are FURIOUS about plans being considered by ministers to get stay at home mums back to work.

Partners of Brits who are on benefits may be specifically targeted to get a job under proposals being mulled over by government officials.

MPs including Stella Creasy have hit out at the idea

Department for Work and Pensions boss Mel Stride is preparing a major drive to get nine million economically inactive Brits back to work and drag them off benefits.

Officials are looking at how to reach previously left-behind and forgotten groups and woo them back into a job that suits them.

Plans could see a letter-writing campaign or advertising blitz for mums who aren’t working but live in a UC household.

But no final decision on the idea has been made yet.

Universal Credit rules consider anyone living together as a whole group – even if one of them is already working.

MPs and parents have taken to social media to lash out at the idea.

The main criticism is that the government doesn’t provide Brits with affordable childcare options, making the idea of work impossible.

“Mams need accessible, affordable childcare,” Shadow Education Secretary Bridget Philipson said.

“But Tory choices mean childcare costs are soaring and providers closing. They have no ideas. Labour will build a new system supporting families from the end of parental leave to the end of primary school.”

Labour MP Helen Hayes added: “Parents across the country are being priced out of work by our broken childcare system, but the government thinks a letter from the DWP will fix it.

“Totally out of touch.”

On Instagram, Honest Mum said: “Where is the affordable childcare, the fair payment for those in childcare?

“Where is the flexibility, the comprehension that as mothers we’re constantly handed the short straw in the workplace and society?”

Instagrammer Yulia Vorobieva added: “If the nurseries were free like schools are, it would be much easier for single mums to get back to work!

“Why is the government not creating free of charge child care?”

Final plans by government to get Brits back to work are being ironed out ahead of a major announcement before the March Budget.

A Whitehall source said: “Mel has been taking a fresh look at the whole system since becoming Secretary of State and isn’t afraid to shake things up.

“Part of that involves examining the structure of Universal Credit as it stands and understanding how barriers or disincentives can be reduced or removed to ensure as many people as possible who can work – do.”
