HOPES were raised of a Brexit deal today after it was revealed Boris Johnson would intervene in trade talks to speak with Ursula von Der Leyen.

The PM will get involved in the discussions for the first time in months when he holds talks with her on Saturday in a bid to unlock a deal.

Boris will hold talks with the EU Commission chief, Von Der Leyen tomorrow afternoon

The news that the pair will hold talks is being seen as hopeful that both sides can get around the table and seal a deal.

The latest round of Brexit talks is due to end today.

Boris has said he wants the deal done by the middle of October to have time to get it implemented by the end of the year.

Britain will leave the transition period on December 31 no matter what, he’s insisted.

But the news comes the day after Chief eurocrat announced legal action against the UK over the PM’s controversial Brexit legislation – which could result in fines running into hundreds of millions of pounds.

Downing Street missed a midnight deadline to withdraw controversial clauses from the Internal Market Bill and pressed ahead anyway.

Government insiders said the legal threats were a common tool the EU regularly use against member states – and that last year alone there were 800 open cases.

She said: “This draft bill is by its very nature a breach of the obligation of good faith laid down in the Withdrawal Agreement.

“Moreover, if adopted as is it will be in full contradiction to the protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland.

“The deadline lapsed yesterday, the problematic provisions have not been removed.”
