Campbell became friends with Ms Gray while she vetted his diaries from his time in government

Mr Campbell, Tony Blair’s spin doctor, became friends with Ms Gray while she vetted his diaries from his time in government.

He acknowledged he had asked her about the investigation into the lockdown bashes at No10.

But he said: “She said not a peep. Not a thing. She said we could only talk about the weather.”

Mr Campbell said he approved of Labour’s move to bring her in.

He said: “I think it’s a thoroughly good appointment, and provided this fuss dies down, and she does the job I think she will be very very good.

“The truth is Labour do need people who know how to work in government.”

Some Conservatives have demanded Ms Gray come clean over her links to the Labour party’s top brass.

Tory MP Lia Nici said: “There needs to be an investigation into how influential senior Labour figures have been able to poach a senior civil servant.

“These latest revelations show that Sue Gray has a clear bias to the Labour party.”
