JEREMY Corbyn will back John Bercow as a Prime Minister of national unity if MPs oust Boris Johnson.

The Labour boss will stand aside because he does not have the support needed to move into No10.

Remainer MPs want anti-Brexit Speaker John Bercow as a PM of ‘national unity’ as they plot to oust Boris Johnson

Mr Corbyn told allies he is happy to support another candidate, as long as they are not a Labour of Tory MP, The Times reports.

Speaker Mr Bercow was a Tory MP before becoming Speaker in 2009.

BERCOW PLOT

The plot is sure to enrage No10 who view Mr Bercow – who once had a ‘B******s to Brexit’ sticker on his car – as a constant threat to their Brexit plans.

It has previously been suggested by opposition MPs that the Father and Mother of the House Ken Clarke and Harriet Harman head up a government of national unity.

Labour are said to prefer Bercow because Clarke was recently a member of the Conservatives until he was effectively thrown out by Boris Johnson.

A senior Labour source told The Times: We have never ruled out someone else leading a government of national unity but believe Jeremy should be given the first crack of the whip.

Mr Corbyn has previously said he should head a new government if Mr Johnson is booted out of No10 by a Commons vote of no confidence.

But the idea has been rejected by other opposition MPs including Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson who said the Labour boss was too divisive.

Last week it emerged that a Remainer group were planning to back Mr Bercow as a temporary PM and intended to put him at the head of a cabinet of all talents.

The Remainer Speaker’s cabinet would be made up of clean skins MPs that are not restricted by loyalty to their parties who will work together in the national interest.

A source said: If none of the opposition party leaders are given roles in the cabinet, then it should allay Corbyns fears that his authority will drain away if he does not become caretaker prime minister.

They added: MPs who are standing down will also be able to rise above their own self-interest because they will not be seeking re-election, meaning they will be able to put the country before their own parties.

Labour MP Shami Chakrabarti dismissed the notion as fantasy football.

The shadow attorney general told Andrew Marr on the BBC: “If I may say so, we are now getting into almost fantasy football.

I think it’s unlikely, I really, really do.”
