A FIRM advertising jobs on the Government’s Pick for Britain campaign website says recruits must speak Bulgarian or Romanian fluently.
Kent-based food producer S&A is advertising for an Irrigation Assistant on the Government website that is recruiting furloughed and jobless Brits to fill shortages in the agriculture sector this summer.
The campaign is designed to help farmers who are suffering huge vacancies because of the lack of summer fruit pickers who travel to the UK for the summer months from eastern Europe.
But despite the website designed to target Brits temporarily out of work due to the Covid-19 crisis, the job advert says speaking Romanian or Bulgarian is a must.
Meanwhile speaking English is only needed for “some positions,” the advert says.
S&A is one of the companies advertising vacancies on the Pick for Britain website, which was launched earlier this week as part of the Government’s bid to help farmers find workers for the summer and harvesting season.
S&A describes itself as a “grower, importer, exporter and packer of soft fruit and asparagus”.
Its adverts for Irrigation Assistants, which pays an hourly rate of between £8.21-£8.98, states: “To apply for a skilled position, you will need to speak Romanian and/or Bulgarian fluently. English language is essential for some positions.”
The Environment Department, which oversees the Pick for Britain campaign, has yet to respond to a request for comment.
