Priti Patel said even with a new leader ‘Labour still can’t be trusted on national security’

But several Labour frontbenchers rebelled in a failed bid to vote down the legislation.

Corbynista Dan Carden quit as a shadow treasury minister while Margaret Greenwood resigned as a shadow schools minister.

Ms Greenwood said she “cannot stand by” and back a Bill “that will profoundly impact our civil liberties”.

But ministers said the law is needed to protect undercover cops and spies risking their lives to keep Brits safe.

Home Secretary Priti Patel lashed Labour for not backing the new law.

She said: “Once again, Labour has refused to stand up for those who protect our country and keep us all safe.

“Their leader may have changed, but Labour still can’t be trusted on national security.

“Only the Conservatives will give our security services the power and support they need to keep our country safe.”
