However, it was announced today that she had tragically died two weeks later.

Sir Starmer had cancelled campaign events for a number of days the wake of the accident.

The nature of the incident is unclear.

He had previously praised the incredibleNHSworkers, and said he and his family have been visiting her in intensive care for four days.

Politicians have since rallied around Sir Keir after the loss.

Jenny Chapman, the chair of his campaign, wrote on Twitter: “My thoughts and prayers are with Keir Starmer and his family. Keirs mother-in-law died yesterday following an accident two weeks ago.

“Thank you to everyone for being so kind and supportive and for respecting his familys privacy at this difficult time.”

Labour MP for Ashton Angela Rayner added: “Sending my deepest condolences to Keir Starmer his family at this terribly sad time. Keirs mother-in-law died yesterday following an accident two weeks ago.”

Sir Keir and his solicitor wife Victoria Starmer have been married since 2007.
