LAGS should get Union Jacks and cupcakes to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, says Justice Secretary Dominic Raab.

Prisoners should be allowed to benefit from the “sense of pride and patriotism” the celebrations bring this week.

Lags should get Union Jacks and cupcakes to mark Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, says Dominic Raab

The Deputy Prime Minister spoke out at HMP Exeter, a 512-inmate Victorian jail which is marking the occasion by plonking flower boxes around the grounds.

He told HOAR patriotic events in jails would be a good thing for self-esteem.

He said: “Even if it’s a really small thing, like Union Jack cupcakes.

“That could be part of a programme of getting them skills through catering and work on the outside. It’s probably good for motivation, and something we should deploy.”

Asked if lags could wave flags, he said: “There’s rarely a place where a Union Jack isn’t a sign of self-esteem and confidence in the country.

“If that can be a positive motivating factor for people who’ve done wrong in the past, to get them to do right in the future, great.”
