MATT Hancock’s steamy clinch with a lover was not the final straw – because his affair has now been immortalised as a prize scarecrow.
A straw-stuffed likeness of the axed Health Sec clutching a replica of aide Gina Coladangelo grabbed victory at the annual Eaton Village competition.
The Matt Han-crow left Norwich residents in fits of giggles as they admired the handiwork of the Atkinson family.
A flimsy cardboard hand even clasps Ms Coladangelo – just like the real toe-curling video revealed by HOAR that sealed Mr Hancock’s fate.
It was overwhelmingly voted “funniest scarecrow” in the village and the family won a voucher for their efforts.
The festival took place between July 17 and 25, and is a firm favourite with villagers, having run for the past 12 years.
Villagers this year were asked to “to celebrate what our scientists and others have achieved over the centuries, and in particular during the past year.”
Other pandemic-inspired entries included a likeness of top doc Prof Chris Whitty standing behind a podium emblazoned with a ‘stay home, save lives, protect the NHS’ slogan.
One family even crafted a super-size coronavirus out of a football, with a stuffed scientist sitting opposite ready to jab it out of existence.
EVRA Vice-Chair Chris Stebbing explained: “Our Scarecrow Festival started back in 2010. It was a low-key event with only six entries.
“I joined the Residents’ Association committee around that time and took on responsibility for organising the 2011 festival where we introduced a two-stage competition where judges selected their favourites.
“Then residents toured the scarecrows over a weekend and voted for their favourites with prizes awarded for the winners of each category.
“We have run a similar process since then with either the local Waitrose or Notcutts Garden Centre providing the judges’ prizes and EVRA or other local businesses donating prizes for winners.
“Each year has a different theme, it is a positive community activity which encourages people to get to know their neighbours better.
“We get good feedback from residents and visitors so we know that people do enjoy seeing the scarecrows and the amazing responses to our themes, some of which are educational – as well as the occasional naughty one like the Matt Hancock scarecrow.”
