NEW “draconian” Tier rules ARE unfair, a minister admitted today as Boris Johnson faces down 100 furious Tory rebels.

The PM will today try to woo his backbenchers into backing him by publishing a bumper plan to prove they work.

The PM faces a tough 24 hours as he gears up for a Commons showdown tomorrow over his toughened up new measures for England, which will come into effect on Wednesday.

Environment Secretary George Eustice said up to 100 Conservative MPs were concerned at the measures – meaning the Government could have to rely on Labour votes to get it passed.

And he admitted that the rules were “unfair” and “draconian”.

He told Good Morning Britain: “”It’s not perfect and never will be when you’re introducing quite draconian emergency measures, which is what these are.”

He promised of the new rules: “we haven’t taken them lightly… We have had to take these to get the virus under control”.

And he added: “What we need to show to those MPs and to the country at large is that we have got a clear route towards fixing this problem and turning the corner.”

Sir Keir Starmer hasn’t yet confirmed his party will back the new Tiers system – but Labour has supported them so far.

The PM will face down rebels and try to win them over ahead of tomorrow’s vote

LOCKDOWN 3?

Mr Eustice said the Tiers system should be enough to make sure that England doesn’t go into a third shutdown.

But when pressed on whether he could rule out another lockdown in the New Year, the Cabinet minster said: “You can’t rule anything out because this is a rapidly developing situation.”
