Mr Sunak last night vowed to do whatever it takes to help the Covid-hammered economy roar back from the pandemic.

Hailing furlough, he said the monster jobs protection scheme means the UK is now experiencing one of the strongest and fastest recoveries of any major world economy.

He added: “But the job is not done yet, and I want to make sure our economy is fit for the future.

“That means providing the support and skills people need to get into work and on in life.”

The cash will help beef up the Kickstart scheme, which helps young people on benefits get a job. And a scheme which bungs bosses £3,000 to take on an apprentice will be extended until the end of January.

Mr Sunak hopes the cash will help the country weather a stormy winter with the end of furlough, Universal Credit cuts and rocketing energy prices.
