SHOPS in Ireland are to set to reopen with people allowed visitors in their homes from next week.

Leo Varadkar today accelerated plans to move Ireland out of lockdown, and promised “all darkness must pass.”

Leo Varadkar today announced the lockdown was easing in Ireland

The Irish Taoiseach announced a series of changes to the Irish lockdown, with boosts for families, workers and businesses.

Quoting from Lord of the Rings, he said: “In the end, it’s only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines, it’ll shine out the clearer.”

Samwise Gamgee says the quote when speaking to Frodo in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

From next week people will be allowed to travel anywhere within their own county on non-essential journeys, scrapping the previous 20km limit.

Groups of up to six people will be able meet indoors, as long as social distancing is maintained.

Sport was also boosted, with Mr Varadkar declaring groups up to 15 could meet outdoors.

There was also good news for the over-70s and medically vulnerable, who will soon be able to have guests at home for a short time.

Shops will also now have dedicated hours for them to visit.

Shopping centres will be allowed to open a week later on June 15, with hotels, restaurants and B&Bs back on June 29.

Currently in the UK Brits can only go on day trips, with groups of six only allowed to meet outside.

Multiple households can now have BBQs and garden parties to make the most of the beautiful weather, but guests are able to stay inside or stay overnight.

The reproductive number of the virus in Ireland is now between 0.4 and 0.7, considerably lower than in Britain.
