Tory MP Zac Goldsmith loses his seat but gets to stay as Minister and is REWARDED with a peerage

FORMER Tory MP Zac Goldsmith who lost his seat at the general election will be elevated to the House of Lords and will stay as a Minister of State.

Downing Street has confirmed Mr Goldsmith will stay on as Minister for Environment and International development and be given a peerage for his efforts.

Mr Goldsmith is the second former MP to be given a peerage so that he can stay in his old job despite losin ghis seat.

His position will be unpaid.

Culture secretary Nicky Morgan was also handed one of the life-time peerages and will continue to serve in Mr Johnson’s cabinet.

Mr Goldsmith’s former seat of Richmond Park was one of the few Tory seats to fall last week.

The former Tory MP lost the London seat to the Liberal Democrats, with a margin of more than 7000 votes.

The wealthy Conservative MP narrowly won back the Richmond Park seat in 2017 after sensationally resigning from Government over the plans to expand Heathrow and then losing the by-election.

Mr Goldsmith held his seat by just 45 votes in the 2017 election.

Ms Morgan was kept on as Culture Secretary, despite standing down prior to the General election and not fighting her seat.

Mr Goldsmith was tipped to hold onto his position, atleast until a bigger Cabinet reshuffle promised for February next year.

The only new appointment was Simon Hart who replaced Alun Cairns as Welsh Secretary, after Mr Cairns resigned following accusations he lied about an aide in a row over a rape trial.
