He secured a big lead over Penny Mordaunt on 19 per cent.

Liz Truss got 15 per cent according to pollsters at Bradshaw Advisory.

Brits labelled both Ms Truss and Ms Mordaunt as happy and strong leaders.

Outsider Kemi Badenoch was seen as young, friendly and smart, but unknown among the electorate, securing just seven per cent.

And 20 per cent had no idea who they preferred to be the next Tory boss, or opted for “none of the above”.

Bradshaw Advisory’s Tom Lees said: “Rishi Sunak is the clear choice for next leader, although Penny Mordaunt wins on individual characteristics such as being a “natural leader” or “decisive”.

“Liz Truss is considerably behind these two candidates.”
