Who is Keir Starmer and will he replace Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader?

SIR Keir Starmer is a clear favourite to lead the Labour party after Jeremy Corbyn steps down.

He was once caught telling business leaders that he’s well aware of how unpopular Corbyn is.

Who is Keir Starmer?

Sir Keir, from London, is a dad-of two.

He has lived in Kentish Town with his wife and kids for the last 20 years.

The shadow Brexit secretary was a human rights lawyer before becoming an MP, and co-founded Doughty Street Chambers in 1990.

Sir Keir has worked to eradicate the death penalty in the Carribbean, and Africa, and most recently in Taiwan.

He worked as human rights adviser to the Policing Board in Northern Ireland, monitoring compliance of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) with the Human Rights Act.

In 2008 he was appointed Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and Head of the Crown Prosecution Service for England and Wales.

Sir Keir was elected as Labour MP for Holborn & St Pancras in May 2015.

Will he replace Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader?

Ladbrokes and Coral said Sir Keir was favourite for the post, offering odds of 5/2 and 2/1 respectively.

In September, a recording, published by HuffPost UK yesterday,exposes the divisions between Mr Corbyn and frontbenchers, who have tried to oust him.

The pair have repeatedly clashed over Brexit policy with Sir Keir wanting the party to push harder for a second referendum.

Speaking to business leaders in Sunderland, Sir Keir said: Im well aware from discussions around the United Kingdom anddoor-knocking and campaigning and canvassing, that a lot of people think we would do better with a different leader.
