THE wife of a Tory MP and ex-Cabinet minister Owen Paterson has been found dead at their family home.
In a statement, Mr Paterson said the loss of his wife, Rose, had come as a “terrible shock” to the family.
“It is with great sadness that I must inform you that my wife, Rose, has been found dead at our family home in Shropshire,” he said.
“Rose and I were married for 40 happy years. She was a wonderful, caring wife, mother and grandmother.
“Her death has come as a terrible shock to us all. I would ask the media to respect the privacy of myself and my family at this extremely difficult time.”
Mrs Paterson, the daughter of the fourth Viscount Ridley, was the chairman of Aintree Racecourse since 2013.
The couple married in 1980 and had two sons – Felix and Ned – and a daughter – Evie.
Rose Paterson was a board member of the Jockey Club, was involved with horses and horseracing throughout her life, including a stint as stable staff in Newmarket before attending Cambridge University.
She completed the 1,000km Mongol Derby in 2011, raising £120,000 for charity alongside her husband, Owen.
Her daughter Evie, as a Junior and Young Rider, has represented Great Britain three times in the European Eventing Championships.
She was also a Trustee of the Weston Park Foundation and a former Trustee of the National Museums of Merseyside Development Fund.
